As a soon to be graduate I was recruited by an industry firm and signed an offer of employment letter from that company. The letter stated a salary amount, job title, and benefits package, and was signed by the firm's representative and myself. In addition, they have a standard employment contract to be signed later, upon my start date with the company after my graduation in four months. This is a solid but entry level position. I have since been offered a preferrable opportunity with a different company, near my fiance, in a far away state. My questions are #1 Do I have the legal right to rescind my acceptance of the prior job offer to accept the latter? #2 Is there any difference in legality between a letter of acceptance and an employment contract? #3 If it is in fact legally permissable for me to choose the latter offer, what steps of notification may I take to help ensure a smooth transition? As a young and inexperienced person, I realize that I made a mistake in taking the first offer to come along. I am hoping to find out how obligated I really am and if there is anything I can do to remedy my error. Thank you for your guidance and your time. KC
